Biography

A DISTINGUISHED ANAESTHESIOLOGIST AND ACADEMIC LEADER

Professor André van Zundert is a Belgian-born anaesthesiologist whose career has spanned more than four decades across Europe and Australia. His work shaped developments in obstetric anaesthesia, regional techniques, airway management, and the neuroscience of general anaesthesia.
Throughout his appointments at major universities and teaching hospitals, he strengthened patient safety, advanced clinical education, and contributed to the scientific understanding of anaesthetic practice.
He authored more than 520 scientific publications, co-wrote influential textbooks, and delivered invited lectures around the world. His research includes landmark studies in regional anaesthesia and innovations in airway management including work featured on the cover of the British Journal of Anaesthesia for its significance.
Although now retired from clinical duties, he continues to be recognised for the enduring influence of his scholarship, mentorship, and international service to the profession.

1980

Completed Foundational Training in Anaesthesia
During his early clinical years, Professor van Zundert focused on obstetric anaesthesia and patient monitoring interests that later shaped his major contributions to epidural safety and labour analgesia.

1983

Appointed Professor, Fontys University of Applied Sciences (Eindhoven)
He began a long academic tenure at Fontys University, where he taught anaesthesia, supervised trainees, and helped modernise educational programs.

1989

Secretary-General, European Society of Regional Anaesthesia (ESRA)
He entered international leadership, coordinating scientific, educational, and professional activities across Europe for more than a decade.

1994

Expanded Research in Regional and Obstetric Anaesthesia
By the mid-1990s, his work included influential studies on epidural test dosing, catheter safety, and labour analgesia research that improved obstetric practice worldwide.
